I'll forgive you for loving too much,
you forgive me for wanting too much.

I'll forgive you for all the disappointment,
you forgive me for all that anger.

I'll forgive you for all those times you were desperate to please,
you forgive me for not trusting you, not believing in you.

I'll forgive you for being hard and cold, for not taking a stand,
you forgive me for being too proud, for not being strong.

I'll forgive you for dreaming and wanting,
you forgive me for being afraid to chase those dreams. for crushing those hopes and desires.

I promise you, I will always listen,
and you promise me you will always speak to me.

I promise you I will always trust,
and you promise me you will always guide me to the truth.

I promise you that I will not give up, I will always try
and you promise to remind me that one failure does not define my whole life.

I promise you that I will unlearn doubt,
and you promise me that you will unlearn fear and rejection.

My dear heart, I promise I will always come back to you, I will listen and trust,
and you promise me that you will always always speak to me.

Monday Mantra - Affirmations to Myself

I will pause. I will breathe. I will sigh and I will smile.
I will do something even if I know I will fail.
I realize that my past does not decide my future.
I will speak with care because my words have power.
I will act and react with care because my actions have power.
I will accomplish more by doing less.
I do not have to do everything at once.
I decide what to keep and what to let go of.
I realize that being strong does not mean making my heart hard or cold.
I will do what makes me happy.
I will laugh. I will cry.
I will love. I will hug, cuddle, squeeze and tickle.
I will love.
I will love.
I will love life.
I will love myself.
I will love you if you will have me.
I promise.

Monday Mantra - I Know I Am Amazing.

You know how sometimes you are looking at something and then you notice there's something more? Maybe you are looking at a flower and you see something shiny. But you blink and it’s gone. So you move around, bob your head up and down, squint, and then you see that delicate cobweb shining in the light, and for a moment you're amazed because it was there all along and you didn’t see it.
You know what else is amazing? You.  And it’s all perspective. It’s all about how you look at yourself. In the right light, under the right circumstances, you could make yourself go 'wow'! Yes you! Look at you, you shiny wonderful dazzling thing!

So right now, in this moment, look at your heart, seems like an ordinary heart. And now think of all that you are ready to forgive, think of all that you are willing to accept, think of all the faith you never lost and think of all the hope you refused to give up. Right now, in your light, you shine and you should know, you are pretty amazing.

Monday Mantra: Be Present.

I had an Aha moment last week when I met Mary for lunch. We were talking about how we need to clean our closets out. How we have stuff from decades ago that we simply don’t want to let go. How one of the reasons we were afraid to let go was because it could mean we would forget. And then I started telling her how my memory is lousy. How old friends say, ‘remember when you did this?', or 'said that'. And I had no idea why I could not remember. She said, 'you don’t remember because you were not present.'

Bam. A-ha.

Yes. I do not remember because I was not present. I was never comfortable in my skin. I was always upset that things were not better, that I should be somewhere else doing something else, and that I was not better. I was never present. I don’t have a bad memory, I either never made a memory or I decided it was a bad moment I did not want to remember. I was completely absent. Damn. Why did I do that to myself? I missed out. Damn. By choosing to be present, by choosing to not judge, by choosing to accept I could have been happier, calmer and not think I was going senile. If I had chosen to be present, I would have have been able to think about my past and smile at the fond memories.

So what’s the moral of the story? Good things come from eating burgers with friends :) and Be Present. Are you present in this body, in this moment, with this breath? There is no good or bad moment, there is no judgment. Are you here? Completely here? What is this moment teaching you?

Monday Mantra: I Choose To Believe in Miracles.

Have you noticed how sometimes you see something only after you believe it? What would happen if you did not take something as chance or coincidence? What would happen if you decided to believe that life is a series of miraculous events? Have you wondered why your heart won't just take a break? Have you wondered what makes the grass continue to be green? Can you concede that our universe is vast and outrageous, and yet here we are right in the middle of it? Can you agree that a sunset, a baby, a sky full of stars and the magic of a kiss, all of that can take your breath away? Have you prayed and prayed for something to happen and then realized, thankfully, that the real miracle was that it did not happen? Why is it easier for you to believe that it rained frogs, that water magically turned to wine than the fact that your smile could mean the world to someone? That each breath you take, the love you feel and that you can understand something you have never seen or touched is a miracle?

What if you gave up cynicism? What if you stopped to look for reasons and explanations? What if you gave up control and gave in to this moment? What if you chose to believe in miracles?

What if you decided you were a miracle and that life itself is a series of miraculous events? What then?

Monday Mantra 9: When I STRETCH, I Make SPACE.

Every time you stretch, you are creating space. Actual physical space. You are making space between muscles, ligaments, fascia, and tendons. You are making space, between your shoulders and toes, in your hips and in your spine. Think of spring cleaning your closet. think about how you look at the mess, and then you systematically start clearing up clothes you don't need, shoes you never wore, dresses that never fit. Think about how you feel when you have taken all that extra stuff out. Imagine how you would look at say a shirt, and you are assesing it. Ask yourself, "Will I ever wear this?", "Do I need it?", "What purpose does it serve?"  and then you decide to get rid of it. All that stuff you never needed but crowded your space. Think about it makes you feel lighter, unburdened. You feel a sense of accomplishment.

Now think about feeling what you need to feel. Thinking what you need to think. Don't judge. Just think it, feel it and decide if you need it in your life or not.

When you make space in your body, you make space in your life. Think about clearing all that 'stuff' you don't need. the thoughts you don't need, the emotions you never wore and the feelings that never fit. Make space for nothing or make space for everything else. Get comfortable in your skin. Make space for love, joy and peace. Make space for You. Go on. Stretch it out.

Monday Mantra 8: If You Are Going To Move...

If You Are Going To Move, Make It Count.

Who are you truly 'moving' for? Yourself? Your yoga teacher? Are you competing with the person next to you? Are you moving forward? Are you moving up? Are you moving someplace deeper?Do you feel pressure? Do you feel freedom? Do you feel light? Are you making a contribution? Are you making progress? Are you in control? Are you creating energy? Is it positive, negative? Are you scared? Or do you feel invincible?

Make your warrior count. Make your breath count. Make that scoop, yes scoop, of almond butter count. Make that trip to your toes count. Make that deep sigh count. If you are going to move, make it count.

May it bring you peace and release. May it bring you fuzzy feelings, hugs, smiles and more than you'd ever need. May it bring me more scoops of almond butter :)  May it bring you sunny days, starry nights, moon beams and sweet dreams. For good or better, if you are going to move, please make it count.

Monday Mantra 7: The Sound of the Rain Needs No Translation

The Sound of the Rain Needs No Translation.

Just like your inner voice needs no translation.
Just like your breath needs no instruction.
Just like your heart needs no affirmation.
Just like your soul needs no consolation.
You don't need authentication.
You are love's creation.
In loving yourself lies your salvation.
You deserve affection.
You deserve protection.
You are your destination.
You are like the sound of rain. You need no translation.

Monday Mantra 6: If You Can't See the Bright Side of Life, Polish the Dull Side

Recently I've been feeling heavy. In body and spirit. I can put the physical heaviness at some 10 pounds. (Curse you Popeyes!!) I find myself retreating into my insecurities. I'm preoccupied. I've lost focus. I'm pessimistic. I'm not flexibile enough. I'm fat. I'm not embodying a yogi enough. I should be making more money. Where is the fame and glory I envisioned as a kid? I should be writing more. I should be drinking more green tea, eating more kale and working on levitation. I should be inspiring more. I should be glowing and peaceful and calm. But I am pissed, irritable, defensive and my skin insists on defying my authority. I can almost hear myself going 'Grrr'!

I am love. I am loving and I am loved. Someone somewhere is missing me. Someone somewhere is thinking of me and appreciates me. I am worthy of love. I am worth more than my scale, my habits and my insecurities. Fried chicken may be my weakness but I am strong for knowing it. I may never enjoy green tea but I'm soaking in the sun and drinking in this perfect moment.  I may never levitate but I'm high from the warm hugs and sweet smiles from my fellow yogis.  I am living a different life than I planned but I am truly so grateful for this perfect life. I may not be famous, but I make a difference and honestly that is enough.

Monday Mantra 5: A Seed is No Small Thing

A seed is no small thing.

That shady tree you sat under? That came from a seed. The old comfy sweater you have had forever? There's a seed that went into making it. That mean soup/casserole/steak you ate? Seed. The favorite couch you sit in, sipping your lemonade while reading a book? All seeds. You, were once the size of a seed.
A seed is no small thing.

To wake up every morning, literally wake up, where your body wakes itself up, is no small thing.
To taste your coffee while you open a gadget, type in a few words and read my blog, this is no small thing.
To see yourself in the mirror, touch someone's skin, hear laughter and to say thank you; these are no small things.
To love deeply with no fear of your heart breaking is no small thing.
To know that you are made up of the same things that make up the sun, moon and stars is no small thing.
To truly forgive, to have faith and to truly accept. these are no small things.
To choose to live and not exist, this is no small thing.
You are no small thing.

Monday Mantra 4: Its Not Easy But It's Worth It.

Have you ever felt proud after you did 'Easy' work? Have you respected someone who had it 'Easy'? Has 'Easy' work ever felt gratifying? You guys, its called 'Hard' work for a reason. It is not easy, it is hard.  It is uncomfortable. It is frustrating. It is annoying. It can be depressing and it can be painful.

It can also be liberating and gratifying. It will make your toes tingle and your eyes sparkle. It will make you hold your head up high, it will make you ooze sparkly bits. You will have persevered and you will have conquered your doubts. You accept all that is 'imperfect', and you make space for all the things that truly matter. Love. Truth. Kindness. Love(1). And i do not mean doing extra planks or wheel poses. Some days simply showing up is hard work but I promise you, it's worth it. You are worth it(2).

(1)I think Love deserves to go twice
(2)I realize I sound like a L'Oreal ad, but I'm going to stick with it.

Monday Mantra 3

The little things you do today will lead you to the big things you are meant to do someday.

Life may seem to be made of big problems but learn to rejoice the little accomplishments and you will celebrate big victories.

What have you noticed today? Did you notice your lower back did not hurt as much in a forward bend? Did you notice you can now touch your toes? Did you notice that deep sigh in down dog? Did you notice how dancer's pose just got a little bit easier? It is easy to give up, to get discouraged, to think "I will never do that", but you learned to walk before you ran and so give yourself the same patience and credit you would to someone you deeply love. Like you would your child. You are worthy of that kind of love.

This post is especially for all my beginner yogis. (Buddy and RPP, I’m looking at you :) I noticed that smile when you touched your toes, and I heard your sigh of content in child's pose, I heard that "OMG!" in your spinal twist, I saw you shake in plank and I rejoice that you held it for one more breath today. I appreciate how you tell me you 'hate that pose' but you do it anyway, how you modified a pose to nurture your body, how you make the choice to turn up on that mat and practice yoga every time. I appreciate that you trusted me to guide you to your small victories. May your victories be abundant.

Monday Mantra 2

Image of an elephant painting at The National Elephant Institute in Thailand.

A man was passing some elephants in a zoo, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from the ropes they were tied to but for some reason, they did not.
The man saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. "Well," he said, "When they are very young and much smaller we use the same size of rope to tie them and, at that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free." The man was amazed.  These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

You can see a video of an elephant painting here:

I did not write this story but it makes one think. How much have we missed out on simply because we never knew we could? What could we have become? What amazing adventure would we be on right now? There is only one way to know and make up for lost opportunities. Start right now. And I hope you realize that there are no lost opportunities. All opportunities, pursued or ignored have brought you to this moment and this opportunity. Go on. Do It Now.

Monday Mantra 1

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
-- Anais Nin --

This is one of the very first quotes I posted online and it still is one of my favorite quotes.  We are so used to thinking of our life as a series of rock bottom episodes. But I want you to think. When was the last time you truly hit rock bottom? Do you remember that helpless hapless hopeless feeling when you felt the pain would surely take you this time?
Now, think about how you felt the next day, the day after that. Think about how you felt a week later, a month, maybe it has been many many years since you felt that same pain. Look. You made it. You are here, that pain may be subdued and you are forever changed but you are here. The climax has come and gone, the pot has overflowed, the waves have crashed and the bud has finally blossomed. You have finally blossomed.

That pain has broken you free. It let the light come through and now you shine. Look at you. You my friend, are Awesome.
